Weekend Junket #05

Please take this for what it is - simply some inspiration to get you creating!  There are no hidden agendas or objectives, no I have to or else, just some simple prompts to hopefully inspire you to create!

Remember, how you choose to interpret the prompts is totally up to you! You can apply them to an Art Journal, Mixed Media project, Scrapbook Layout(s), ATC's or even Cardmaking, you choose!  Perception is how YOU see things, not me (or anyone else for that matter).  There is NO right or wrong way to take these prompts.

If you choose to partake in the 'prize' part of this challenge, I do have a couple requests/rules.  I need to be able to find them.  So you will be asked to either link it to this post via the links button at the bottom of this post on the blog or put it on the W2 Scrapbooking Facebook page under the coordinating post.  If you choose to post on Instagram, please use the hastag (#) #w2wj_ _ along with the week number.  For example, this week will be#w2wj05

Colors that Inspire...THE WEATHER

What colors do you think of when you think of the weather?  Use that as yet another inspiration for you for your project(s) this time around.

At times I may find it interesting to put a twist on the prompts is to use the term....

Use something NEW, something OLD something BORROWED and something BOLD!

Now understand that I may not use the above on every challenge, but  I sure am gonna try!  

Here is my take on the challenge prompts:

I really want to emphasize that art journaling is subjective and what works for me may not work for the next person.  I simply want to share that how, what and where you create is your choice!  Is is right or wrong...that is up to you!

This time around I thought I would try something a little bit different.  I am not using the 'standard' art journal.  I have a pretty large stash of journals, albums, books and such - so I really want to show that creating in general can be done just about anywhere.  So I dug into my bin and came out with one of my Basically Bare Albums (there still a few left on the site and on clearance, great item to stock up on).  Knowing that I needed to use Absorbent Grounds on my piece so that I would be able to blend the Gelatos and still maintain their vividness, I prepped the chipboard page first with Gesso and once dried I added two coats of Absorbent Grounds and allowed to dry for well over an hour.  I once again knew I wanted to use colors that are not normally in my wheelhouse.  So after digging all the colors out - I thought why not purple.  Well - probably because I only had two shades of it!  So I hit the store shelves and looked at what was there - after seeing how these are packaged, made me think it all over again.  The Blue pack and the Red pack both had purples in them...so why couldn't I use a mix of these?

I started out by scribbling on the lighter shade of blue (Cotton Candy). Began to blend it using my Koi Water Brush, but  quickly stopped that as I was working on a 9x11" page as you can image...that got old pretty quick!

above: the bottom left hand corner is where I began using the water brush - it truly provides the best outcome, but like I said earlier, not a chance I was going to use that little brush for a 9x11" page).  Having said that, you could try using a soft bristle paint brush and water.

I added a second shade of blue (Blueberry) and continued to blend.  I used my finger, the water brush, my spray bottle and even baby wipes.  All worked nicely.  The baby wipe blended beautifully, however it did also remove the most color.

Next came the stencil.  I used Crafter's  Workshop Four Feathers (TCW405) 12x12" stencil and started tracing the outline with Boysenberry so I could blend the colors as a base.  Again, I used the water brush and my finger.

Using another part of the stencil, I tried using it an overlay (which it does not line up by the way), but made it work.  I used Black Cherry as my next color to blend in. 

Now it needed some lightness, so I accented with Lavender, and continued to blend the colors with the water brush and my fingers. 

The water brush really provided nice wispy's too.

I was still finding it a tad too dark - so I spritzed it with my water bottle, really trying to focus on the feather. Then I dabbed the page using my craft rag.

Really liking how it was coming along - almost makes it look like I had used a mica spray.

Now it was time to use the next prompt - cork!  Ya, I may have cheated a bit on this one.  I have a basket full of corks and this one is an old one - snagged it off my girl Nicky at one of our Bittern Lake trips as she always provides Mimosa's and when the cork flew one morning I snagged it when she tried to put it in the garbage...daaahh! 

I dipped it in my oh so clean water and then 'stamped' it on the page. 

I thought it was not looking much like a feather anymore, so I decided to rein it using my Faber Castell Big Brush Pen in Black.

I will say, it is harder to blend the pitt pens on absorbent grounds verses gel mediums - but I do still like the results.

Takeover Thursday!

I’m so happy to hijack Wendy’s blog again today!

I let Wendy pick my inspiration for today’s project.   She had a choice between “Teal”, “Texture” or “Stamp”.   She chose stamp, so I grabbed my Dina Wakely Media All Girls Stamp (the first one I saw), opened up my Art Journal and had some fun.

I decided to use my small Dylusions Journal  and since they were in my sight I grabbed my Pan Pastels. 

I stamped the ladies on my page using Rangers Perfect Medium (although any embossing ink should work).    Once they were stamped I used Pan Pastels to color in the ladies and selected background.   Notice how the Pastels cling to the Perfect Medium.   I've only used Pan Pastels a few times, and I’m determined to get more use out of them, they are quite pricey but you can do AMAZING things with them. 

  

Once I had the color how I wanted I drew a thick line in black Pan Pastel to create a page break.   I enjoyed the look of the white space, but couldn't help myself…I need to add color!!

First I took the word stamps from the stamp set and randomly filled in the bottom of the page using Ranger's Black Archival Ink.   When it was done I took a Pink and Red Pitt Pen and highlighted words.   Once that was done I used my Green Gelatos to create a water color look

Note to self:  Pan Pastels are not water resist…do not spray water, use a waterbrush!!

Time to do the top.  I pulled some old butterfly wood stamps I bought YEARS ago, and stamped these randomly on the top with Ranger's Black Archival Ink.    Once somewhat dry I used Blue Gelatos and my Waterbrush to fill in the space around the butterflies.    For an extra pop of color I spread Purple, Yellow and Orange Gelatos on my craftmat, sprayed with water and “watercolored” the inside of the butterflies for an extra pop of color.

This page was so fun and took my less than an hour…I simply adore it!

Another weekend...another creative retreat!

A few weekends ago I got a chance to go to Crop Haven on the Base here in Cold Lake.  This monthly weekend crop is hosted by the MFRC on Base and they put a pretty good show!  Lots of space, lots of fun and lots of creativeness floating around!

I started off Friday night doing a challenge with a friend of mine from another community that of course could not come (boo), so we simply did it via iPhones!  I challenged her to do a page from a class we have been taking online but not 'copy' her page, just the techniques.  Here are the results...


I prep'd the page using my handy palette knife and gesso of course lightly and roughly.  I grabbed one of my old books and tore out a couple pages and then tore them into pieces randomly.

I adhered the pages using Gel Medium and did not adhere them down totally, just the tops so the bottom halves flopped in the wind (the music sheet is adhered totally)!

Now comes the fun part - I used modeling paste to create texture and 'hold down' parts of the bits and pieces of paper

To add more texture and flow, I added a strip of Prima Finnabair Elementals Borders #3 

Continued adding some Modeling Paste, this time to add the die cut shape of Tim Holtz Alterations Umbrella Man and some washi tape of course!

Now time to add some color....Golden Glazing Liquid mixed with Gelato!

What If? Why Not?

...are questions I ask myself regularly when I am working in my craft room.  For so many years, we were (and in some cases are still being) told how we should be scrapbooking and how we should be using products - well as most of you know...I'm a tad bit of a rebel!  Last time I checked there were no 'Scrapbooking Police' out there that enforced how products had to be used.  I will start showing you some of my 'what if's' and 'why nots' here on the blog, I am sure some will be a success and and pretty sure some will be total flops - but honestly, that is the fun of it all!

This journal page will start it all off...

I have a fascination with anything kraft (and red and black) - honestly, my favorite combo!  So that is what inspired me to play with some Kraft light weight paper and Ink Refresher....very cool effect!  Once that was dried, I sprayed with Mister Huey's and Color Wash.  I sprayed the base of my art journal page witht he same colors and then added the manipulated scrap sheet  of kraft paper and adhered it to the page using Multi Medium.

Here comes my first 'What If?' - What if you mix Alcohol Ink with Modeling Paste? What's the worst that can happen?  

Worse that happened is that it breaks down the modeling paste.  But also, I can still work with that.  Not overly happy with the dull color, so...

Why Not?  Let's see what happens when we add Perfect Pearls (something that is in my tickle trunk and never use)!

So what does one do with a leaky top?

Waste not want not...I want to use it!

Once the modeling paste was dry, I stamped on it using Ranger Ink Archival Jet Black Ink and a Kaisercraft Texture Stamp Numbers

to get the drips, I simply unscrewed the top of the Mister Huey's and flicked it onto the page.

Added some Washi Tape, 7 Gypsies Ephemera and more ink...looking good!  The background on this page is simply taking of the lid of the Adirondack Color Wash Red Pepper and poured some into a palette tray then used a very wet brush to pick up the liquid and painted my page!

Here is some more Washi Tape and the verse is cut out of a sheet of Glitz Design Paper Layers Color Me Happy (I think)!

Now it is time to add what seems to be a must for me on every page...gelatos!  Used Black and Red accents on the edges...so love this look!
